Gallerist contributes to Donatello study

In anticipation of the 2023 ‘Donatello: Sculpting the Renaissance’ exhibition at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London and the Palazzo Strozzi and Museo Nazionale del Bargello in Florence, Italy’s Predella Journal, spearheaded by editor Neville Rowley, curator for Early Italian Art at the Gemäldegalerie, Skulpturensammlung und Museum für Byzantinische Kunst, organized an academic evaluation of Donatello’s works preserved in Germany. The 2022 journal publication included our essay concerning Wilhelm (von) Bode´s spirit of acquisition in turn-of-the-century Berlin, resulting in the formation of a significant and comprehensive collection of Donatelloesque bronze relief sculptures—called plaquettes—conceived during the Renaissance. The article explores the function of plaquettes and the previously unexplored influence Donatello had in their early genesis as a genre of sculpture.
