The present painting belongs to the French School school of academic art herewith depicting a still life of hunted game including a rabbit and pheasant accompanied by other tabletop accoutrements like an onion, copper pot, etc. Such scenes were popular genre subjects among the academies of France and were inspired by the Dutch traditions of hunting scene still life paintings produced during the 17th century. Other French talents of the period likewise engaged this genre, like the famed Edouard Manet, whose earliest explorations in impressionism were conveyed through such subject matter.
Condition commensurate with age. Canvas appears to be relined. Craquelure along surface areas, minor flaking of paint and various minor creases along the surface area especially around the frame support. A scuff or scratch to the old varnish is present on the upper right of the painting. A beautiful antiquated patina of age throughout.
