Nautilus shells have long been a staple of wonder for lovers of shells and as prized objects adorning Naturalia-themed curiosity cabinets. Their frailty and uniqueness have contributed to their fame as prized possessions.  In Renaissance Germany the finest specimens were frequently encased in precious silver beset with motifs according to the tastes of the era.

The present shell is mounted to a vintage brown alabaster vase, trimmed with openwork gilt metal trim along the base and upper rim.

The shell is from the estate of a professional fossils dealer.  The base is from a vintage alabaster lamp produced in Sicily, Italy.

Condition: Straight from nature. Minor fissures along exterior of the shell.  The alabaster base has minor nicks and wear and was previously broken and has since been repaired.
