Oil on board in an ebony and giltwood frame with polychromy
Approximate size: 7.5 (h) x 8.5 (w) x 1.25 (d) in.
This naïve pedestrian painting showcases the maritime culture of Dutch life in a folkloric manner. It’s subject appears inspired by the earlier talents of Willem van de Velde II or Johan Danckerts. A multi-masted Royal Dutch Warship in-profile dominates the right-side othe painting while smaller boats ride beside or exit over the horizon line. This modest painting has lovely time worn texture and color palette while the painted inner frame adds a rustic charm.
Condition commensurate with age. The painted surface suffered an intense degree of craquelure due to an old harsh varnish applied to its surface.
