Bohemia; ca. 1700
Oak

Approximate size: 17 (h) x 7 (w) x 4.75 (d) in.

The present oakwood sculpture, with its cinched lower face and flamboyant curling hair is characteristic of angelic representations in the region of Bohemia during the late Baroque and early Rococo era. The angel may have once been painted in bright colors, but since stripped, perhaps during the late 19th century when the practice of removing paint from wood sculpture was vogue.

The arms and lower legs of the sculpture are lacking on account of the perils of time. However, the remaining visage of this delightful sculpture is captured by the serene disposition of its expressive face, reminding what is in heaven is distinct from the trials of earthly toil.

The sculpture features two eyelet rings on the reverse for wall display.

Condition: lacking extremities but otherwise in good, stable condition.
