Gilt Copper
Approximate size: 23 (h) x 16.5 (w) x 24 (d) in.
This full bodied moulded gilt copper eagle weather vane is a splendid survival of late 19th century American folk art. During the last third of the 19th century, gilding was a prestigious option available to enhance the appearance of weathervanes among producers of this object-type, with manufacturers often touting the longevity of their gilding. The extensive presence of the gilding still intact on this long-used example is testimony to this claim. While some examples are well preserved and moderately used, this example appears to have withstood the ravages of weather over a long duration, whilst developing a handsomely aged patina. Similar examples of this celebrated model were manufactured by J. W. Fiske and Co., Washburne, Harris and Company and Cushing and White.
Condition commensurate with age and use. A dent is present along upper proper left brow line of the eagle’s head and the directional compass is lacking. A sun-beaten patina is present along the upper surface of the eagle, forming a handsome time-worn craquelure texture.
