This antique pair of European Church candlesticks whisper tales of flickering candlelight and solemn hymns. Hand carved and originally partially gilt and painted their surfaces bear the beautiful imperfections of age - chips and scratches earned through years of service. Intricate hand-carved details wind around their forms, depicting stylized motifs typical of the late Baroque era. A curious feature distinguishes them: a later application of silvering, meticulously applied to only one side of each candlestick. This unexpected detail suggests a deliberate aesthetic choice, perhaps intended to catch and reflect the light in a particular way, or simply a later attempt to enhance their beauty while preserving their aged character. The contrast between the dark, weathered wood and the subtly gleaming silver creates a captivating visual tension, hinting at the passage of time and the layers of history embedded within these silent witnesses.
Condition commensurate with age. Minor chips and losses. Minor losses to the decorative trim around the iron candle cups. The candle holding sprues are in a delicate state.
