A suite of deceptive copies of Albrecht Dürer’s ‘Small Passion’ woodcut series by Johann Mommard. This group of prints includes the Last Judgment, Pilate Washing His Hands, the Expulsion from Paradise and the Last Supper.

Mommard’s copies are arduously faithful in their accuracy. Each line is carefully rendered and is testimony of Mommard’s attention to detail and talent as a block cutter. Mommard’s rendering of the series is in a slightly different chronological order than Dürer’s original which was printed as part of a bound literary work published in 1511. Two prints in the original series are dated, 1509 and 1510, respectively, and indicate their completion only a few years after Dürer’s second return from Italy.

Provenance: the print of the Expulsion from Paradise features a faint collectors mark on the verso of George Hamminger (Lugt 1159).

Condition: Unframed, trimmed just outside the margins. Traces of old mounting tape once applied to the verso of the Pilate print are stained through to the surface of its upper and lower margins on the recto. Some spotting is present in the upper margin of the Last Supper. These prints have lightly browned in tonal quality, commensurate with their age.
